Every year, millions of people set goals and make resolutions, but why does it seem like we can never reach our goals? It seems like we have all these big dreams of doing these awesome things, but it just seems like we can never get it done, whether it’s. Having to take care of the kids feeling like you’re just so.
Engrossed with work. Or maybe you’re just feeling like you just don’t have time because there’s so many other things that you have to get done at work and at home.
But the thing is only about 9% of people are successful in keeping their goals and resolutions. So how can you be in that 9%? Oh, that’s what I’m going to talk to you about in this episode. I’m going to share with you ways that you can get those big goals accomplished this year without burning yourself out.
Hey there. My name is Tony and I am the host of the real happy mom podcast. The podcast for busy working moms who need hope with managing their time and achieving their big goals without pulling their hair out. And that’s what i’m going to be sharing with you in this episode so make sure you grab a notebook and pen because i’m going to be giving you some tips on reaching those big goals this year.
Hey, before we jump into this episode, if you have listened to at least two episodes and you’ve enjoyed it. Do me a favor, press pause, and go over to the ratings and review section and leave a five star rate and review. This helps me out so much and gets the word out to other moms that this is a great podcast to listen to. And I appreciate it so much. Now let’s jump on to this episode.
In 2020. I met a really awesome person. Named bro Thomas. She was an inspiration to me because she had paid off a huge amount of student loan debt with her and her husband. She is an attorney and her husband is a physician and I could relate to her in so many levels. As far as graduate and professional school and leaving out with a huge student loan bill.
So I immediately gravitated to her because I really wanted to find out how she did it because I wanted to be like her too. I also gravitated to her because I felt like if she could do it, then I can do it too. So I convinced her to be my money coach. And in nine short months I paid off $20,000 in credit cards. I was able to accomplish this huge goal with a few simple steps that I want to share with you here in this episode.
So, I know you had these huge goals and it may not be like mine, uh, paying off the credit cards. But if you’re interested, make sure you check out episode one 70, where I talked to RO and we talk about our experience and everything that happened to get me to that point of paying off all of those credit cards.
But your goals may be really big ones like running a marathon, starting a business. Making a million dollars. Owning your dream car, or maybe even learning the new language. I found that, that there’s a couple of things that prevent people from actually pursuing those big goals. One of those things. Is this feeling like you don’t deserve the big goals? And we feel like we don’t deserve them because they’re so big and so audacious. But the thing is, once you begin to work on those goals, you will begin to feel like you deserve it.
Hold on to those goals and the things I’ve accomplished and appreciate things more. And another reason why I have found that people don’t go after their goals or don’t end up accomplishing them. It’s because they don’t understand their reason. Why. And one thing that I’ve learned from my friend Kendall, and you can check out episode number 68. She’s another money coach too. That helped me understand the five. Why technique?
And this really helps you find a reason why you want to have that big goal. Because many times you think like, oh, I just went to. Write a book. Well, why do you want to write a book? Oh, I want to write a book because. I’ve always wanted to get my story out in the world. Well, why do you want to get your story out in the world?
Oh, well, because I have struggled with many different things over my life, and I know that there’s other women that could benefit from it. So, where does some of those things that you struggle with and why do you think other women are struggling with those things too? Oh, I struggled with. You know, fertility issues and I was able to have my child and I want other moms to know that they can have a child too.
Why do you want other people to know? This, and let’s see, I feel like they can have a child too. Like you did. Well, I want to impair empower moms and empower women so that they know that there are other resources out there. And they can really figure this thing out so that they can have their dream of having their child.
So you see how we went from, I just want to write a book to. I want to empower women to know that there’s resources and things out there so that they can have their child or their dreams. This is why the five, why technique is so, so helpful because they really helped you dig deep into why you want to have those goals.
So next time, you’re trying to figure out why make sure you use the five. Why technique? And then once you understand your why, and you know, your, why. Go ahead and make sure that you’re reflecting on it on a daily basis so that you can remind yourself, especially when the going gets tough, that this is a reason why you’re going after this big goal.
And then the other reason that I’ve found that many times people don’t go after their big goals is they immediately give up once they get started, because what happens is they go really hard, really fast, I’m working on their goals, and then they end up burning themselves out. But you don’t have to go hard and fast to reach your goals. All it takes.
Is small little steps. And one thing that I’ve found that is really, really helpful is the one degree rule. And the one degree rule, it stays there for Easter GRI, a plane veers off course. It misses his destination by one mile for every 60 miles at flies. So literally being off of one degree. We’ll set you off the path so far. And so there’s an example that says that if you’re flying from San Diego, California,
So Hawaii, you would miss Hawaii by 42 miles being off course by one degree. So you see how one degree seems so small and insignificant, but it makes a huge difference in the long run. And that’s one thing that we have to find. Small ways so that we can reach those big goals. So I am forced. That’s here for you. That is going to help you with.
Getting to those big goals and making a little bit easier for you so that you can actually get to the end of this year and have accomplished a lot. So the first thing is getting clear on what you want. And writing it down. So for me, going back to my example of paying off the credit cards, I got really clear and I told RO I want to have a zero balance on all of my credit cards. That was my big goal. So getting very clear helps you to know exactly where you’re going, because it’s one thing to know which city you’re going to, but it’s another thing to know the address that you’re going to. So get clear on exactly what you’re wanting.
And then once you get clear on it, make sure that you’re writing it down because research has shown that you’re 42% more likely to achieve your goals. If you write it down. So next you want to determine milestones so that you can keep yourself motivated and track your progress. So going back to my example of paying off the credit cards.
I did things in $2,000 increments. And it’s like, it was really small at first, but like I said, it built up over time and in nine months I had reached my goal. So setting milestones will help you to one see your progress to help you track your progress. And three it’ll help keep you motivated because you’ll see how far you came.
So the next step is to figure out how to change your everyday life so that you’re making small steps every day. So going back to the one degree rule, remember. You know, and they take something very small that you’re doing every day to make a big difference. So for me, one of the biggest things that was, well, it sounded like it was small, but it wasn’t that small to me, but a small James that I made in my life.
Was cutting down the amount of days out order door dash. Because the girl loves some door dash. I love the convenience of it. I love that I don’t have to cook. It is just amazing. And I thank God for the person that created during Tash. But the problem is I was door dashing so many times throughout the week.
And it was causing me so much money. So instead of ordering door dash every other day, What I was doing was cooking more. Even though I didn’t really particularly like cooking more. I actually found that fun once I got started, but I would tell myself, instead of doing door dash four days out of the week, I’m only going to do door dash two days out of the week. It was actually more than four, but we’re.
We’re not going to go there. So cutting out door dash was one simple way that I was able to make a huge difference with just a small little step. So what’s something that you can do. If you’re trying to write a book, can you write 200 words a day? If you’re trying to run a marathon. Can you go and take walks or go on runs?
Every other day or once a week. What is something small that you can do every day that will help you to get to your goals? And then lastly, the last step is just finding a way to fall in love with the day and not just the destination. Because yes, the big goal is to pay off those credit cards for me, but.
It was so much fun. And so many things that I would’ve missed if I would’ve just focused on just paying off the credit cards. There were so many skills that I picked up. There were so many things that I’ve learned that I was doing and not doing. So find ways to fall in love with the journey and not just the destination.
So ask yourself, how can I find ways to enjoy this a little bit more? Because there’s always going to be things that you don’t enjoy or don’t want to do, but it’s definitely a way to make things more enjoyable. So you can have fun along the process.
