Many times we hear that we need to work out and eat good foods to stay healthy, which is true. But there is more to your health than that.
My guest Ryanne shares how it is important to not only be healthy but also have a strong body. In order to carry out good works, we need a strong body that is dependant on nutrition, sleep, and exercise.
If you are like me and grew up in church, I pretty sure you have heard the saying “your body is your temple.” Ryanne shows us why this is and that God cares about everything in our lives, including our health.
If you are ready to that a holistic approach with biblical principles, this episode is for you.

Hey there, and welcome back to another episode of the Real Happy Mom podcast today. I have one of my lovely yellow pad ladies on today. And if you’re wondering what is his deal with the yellow pod, so really quick, quick story. So it’s definitely gas, he was actually a guest here on the podcast. She has a program called podcast to profit. And in this program, there are about 20 Ladies and she splits the group up into two different groups or pods. So my group that I was in was called the yellow pod. So I’ve had a lot of my yellow pod systems on. And that is where our yellow pod comes from. So today, I have another one of my yellow hat ladies like I was talking about. She is a health and wellness coach, and I am super pumped to have her on it’s Ryan. And in this episode, we are going to be talking about a couple of things. In particular, we’re talking about her approach to health and wellness as a holistic health coach and including her faith. And then also she talks about why it’s important for us to have a strong body, and then tap into the four different pillars that we should be focused on when it comes to health and wellness, new Lassie, she shares with us some scriptures that show us that God cares about everything in our lives, including our health and wellness. And then she gives us some really good advice on how we can do better about taking care of ourselves. So if this is something that you know, you need some help, and you definitely want to stay tuned and listen to this full episode. Right? She is so awesome. And I just love how easy and simplistic she makes things for us. So let’s go ahead and jump on into this week’s episode.
Real Happy Mom 2:26
All right, welcome to the podcast. Ryan, I am excited to have you.
Ryanne 2:31
Thank you so much for having me. I’m really excited to be here and chat with you. Yes,
Real Happy Mom 2:35
yes, you are one of my favorite love the yellow. Hi, ladies, and I’m excited to have you on and just have a conversation with you. Just because I know you bring a different perspective when it comes to health and wellness. But before we jump into our topic, I want to do to share a little bit about you and what you do.
Ryanne 2:56
Awesome. Well, I’m a wife, and I’m a mom to three kids. So our oldest son, your eyes, eight, our daughter, Katie is five and then our baby boy, Ezra is three. And I’m a full time working mom. But I also have my own business called wellness and the word also have a podcast of the same name. And it’s where my passions collide. It’s where Jesus and wellness collide. Those are the two things that I love. And I left my corporate job almost four years ago to kind of follow my wellness dream and stay home with my kids. And during the three years that I was home, I found it really difficult. I was not a Real Happy Mom. I was trying to find fulfilment and all the things and God was continually just working on me to remind me that I wouldn’t find fulfillment in the world, in my marriage in my kids in a job. Because while all of those things can be fulfilling, something I believe is that we all have a god shaped hole in our hearts. And only God can fill it. So all the other things no matter how good they are they they won’t fill that void. So they’re all of that wellness, and the word was born last year to help other women make that connection.
Real Happy Mom 4:08
Awesome. Awesome. And I love all of that. And the one thing that I love about your story too, is how you just have this different approach to health and wellness. And that’s what I was kind of alluding to before, because I feel like with mainstream health coaches in particular, you know, they have a particular way of, you know, getting their message across and how they, they do things but your approach is a little bit different. So I want you to share what your post to help is with the combination of you being a holistic health coach, as well as with your faith.
Ryanne 4:45
Yeah, I definitely have a different approach. And again, like you said, that specific anchor for me is my faith. And my view, like you mentioned is through the lens of holistic health which is connecting all of the parts of who we all are As individuals, and one of those things is spiritual health, which in my opinion is the foundation that everything else is built upon and relies upon. And many holistic health coaches say, whatever spirituality is for you, and I’m a little more bold, where I say, listen, Sister, I know what it is, and it’s God. So I really have a passion for introducing people to God, or helping them really refine their faith. So I combine God’s word as a spiritual anchor, and we connect it to the physical, mental and emotional wellness, which is the other parts of the holistic health because they all matter. And they’re all deeply connected. But for me, it’s the spirituality and the faith. That’s the anchor.
Real Happy Mom 5:44
Yes, Yes, for sure. And I can totally relate to all of that. And one thing that I wanted to talk to you about in particular is about how we hear a lot of times that we need to work out we need to eat good foods, you know, the message, but just true. It’s kind of gotten to me, like my mom, Dr. Brown noise, but I just wanted to know, like, why is it so important for us to have a strong body because I know what people are getting at? It’s like, yeah, you want to make sure that your body is in good shape, and you’re taking care of your body. But it’s really important for us to have a strong body. And I wanted you to talk to us why it’s important for us to have that.
Ryanne 6:24
Yeah, I believe that. Well, right now, I think we all are, it’s more about vanity, usually, which is totally okay to care about what you look like and feel good about yourself. But I believe more than anything, it’s about being good stewards of the body, we were given through the physical aspects, good nutrition, hydration, movement, and then good sleep. So I think that those things can help us be better servants to God. Again, I always bring it back to that Ephesians 210 tells us that we were created in Christ Jesus for good works. So I believe that in order to carry out those good works, we have to have a strong body in mind, keeping our bodies strong and functioning properly, allow us to have a good quality of life. So that are able to get around easily think clear, have balanced hormones, all of those things that sometimes we take for granted, but they’re actually a gift. And we have to keep those in control. We mostly have the power to keep that good health in check. But it does greatly depend on how we take care of our bodies. And again, then coming back and connecting it all together back to the spirit, the mind the body.
Real Happy Mom 7:35
Yeah, because I think a lot of times we forget the other pieces, I think we focus so much on the body part that we forget about, you know, the mental and the spiritual part. So I’m just curious, like how you’re able to kind of make sure that you kind of keep all three of them intact, and you’re not focusing just on one thing, because like, as I know, in particular, especially like with the mainstream coaches, they will focus mainly on the body. But how can we do better about you know, making sure we focus on all three of those parts that you just mentioned?
Ryanne 8:06
Yeah. And I think that’s such a good question, because we are always looking at them as separate pieces. And we’re kind of focused only on our food right now. Right? We might be just like, Okay, I’m gonna work on my nutrition and my exercise. So that’s just the physical. So I think it really for me, it comes down to reevaluating all of the parts, at one time, sitting down and doing journaling. I’m a really big proponent of journaling, and kind of asking some hard questions, and figuring out what is your game plan overall, and then dissecting it piece by piece. So first, you have to look at it as an overall picture, then dissect it piece by piece. And I use four pillars I mentioned earlier, spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional, and then seeing where we’re falling short on each one, focusing on each of those for at least a week as an individual, and then pulling it back all together at the end. So it’s kind of this process of looking at looking at it as a whole, and then piece by piece and then bringing it back together as a whole. And I say that because we’re often trying to, either we’re just focusing on one, or we’re trying to do them all at once, and we’re gonna fail because it’s so overwhelming. There’s so much to do. So I really think that doing it little by little and habit by habit and piece by piece is really the key.
Real Happy Mom 9:35
Yeah, for sure. Because just when you were talking, I was like, oh, like, I know, I gotta do this and this and this. But like you said, If you try to do all of it at one time, it can definitely get overwhelming. So I know in particular, like there’s some moms that want to get started and want to do better and he kind of, you know, focus on on all three. So I know a lot of times we we try to generalize things too much when a lot of times things are kind of individual and I get it, but I was just wondering if there’s anything in particular that you would say like, Okay, I know you mentioned the journaling and asking the hard questions. But anything specifically, you would say, okay, when it comes to physical, you know, make sure you don’t overlook this or when it comes to the mental portion, don’t forget about this. Anything that you could share with us those things so that we can, I guess, start headed more towards in the right direction? Just because I know, it’s, it’s kind of hard when we’re trying to do it on an individual level. But I know that there’s some things that can kind of help us get to that point, too.
Ryanne 10:39
That’s a really good question. I like that. So a key for each of the pillars, I would say the first for let’s start, let’s start with spiritual. So if you’re a believer in God, specifically, I would say, don’t be afraid to get into the Bible. Because that’s where God talks to us. And then on the flip side, don’t, don’t be afraid to pray, because you can’t pray a wrong way. Use your voice. So So I like to help people understand that our relationship with God is two ways, the Bible, how he talks to us, and then prayer, how we talk back. So I would say that’s kind of the simplest thing that you could do for the spiritual, and just start talking to God, if you have never done that, don’t be afraid. Don’t think that you have to use fancy words like God wants to hear from you in your voice, he already knows you. Right. So that’s spiritual. For physical, I would say, I think that there’s four specific things. But the one that gets overlooked the most, because we’re thinking about nutrition and movement, the things that get overlooked the most are the sleep and rest. And those are actually two different things. So focus on your sleep for a little bit, make sure you’re getting your eight or nine hours, which is what most adults need. And I know we hear that all the time. But that really does change so much when you’re adequately sleeping for the proper amount, but then rest on the flip side is just that daily, slowing down and that weekly Sabbath that you have. So instead of focusing on the nutrition and the movement for physical start with just sleeping adequately and resting adequately, and then let’s see emotional and mental, emotional is all about how we are responding versus reacting. And this was something for me that really came out in motherhood, right? I was constantly reacting to my kids and not responding to them. So I think for this, you can do a, I have something called the fruit of the Spirit inventory. And I can share that with you, Tony. And so you can put in the show notes or give to your listeners. I love this tool, because it uses Galatians, 522 and 23, where they talk about the fruit of the Spirit, which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. And using that as like a way to review your day. And was I loving today? Was I kind today? Was I not kind to someone today? How did I speak to them? You know, what words that I use? Was I harsh? Did I have self control when I was speaking to my kids? So for the emotional piece, I would say that’s something really cool that I use. And then mental is just all about what’s going on in our mind. What stories are we telling ourselves? And how are we being kind to ourselves, because when you when you’re living in your own mind, sometimes it can be a crazy play. So it’s really just reeling back in your own thoughts and just doing that heart check. So again, I think mental and emotional are really the big self reflection pieces. That helps.
Real Happy Mom 13:50
Yeah, no, that was really good. And then the biggest thing that hit me was the sleep and rest part. Because I will be honest with you. Like, I think I’m pretty good with asleep, but the rest. And I think as moms we’re just so used to, you know, doing so much and being there for everyone. It’s hard to just kind of stop.
Ryanne 14:13
Yeah, exactly. You don’t even realize like I don’t sit down all day long. It’s crazy. And then when I do I’m like just mind’s going a million miles a minute of what else I need to do.
Real Happy Mom 14:24
Yeah, but I love these different kind of touch points that you gave us for each one of the other pillars here. This is really helpful. Now, the one other thing that I wanted to ask you about, which, especially for those who have grown up in the church, I’m sure you all have heard it about how our body is our temple. And I wanted you to share with us some specific Bible verses that show us how God cares about everything in our lives, including our health because I think a lot of times we think that God is too busy, and he’s not worried about me and my health. Doing but he really is that what is you to help us out with that especially we have those thoughts in our head, where we don’t think it’s important to him.
Ryanne 15:08
Yeah, that’s something I love to talk about. Because, first of all, I love that he calls our bodies temples, because a temple of signifies a sacred place. So it’s significant that he refers to our physical vessel as a temple, he could have said home, he could have been said any other word in the Bible. Everything in the Bible is so intentional. So God’s saying our body is a temple. It’s just proof of how sacred our bodies are. And there are many scriptures that show how God cares about everything in our lives. I would say, the whole Bible is about how much he loves us and cares for us, right. But specifically, I do love to talk about how he cares about everything. And I actually read a book a couple of years ago, it’s called the praying life. And he was talking about how God wants you to pray for a parking spot. He cares about everything, no matter how small it is. And to scriptures that come to mind are first Peter five, seven that says, cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. And Philippians, four, six, do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And I share those two, because he doesn’t say only come to God with the big stuff only with the important stuff, right? What is that? What How could we rate that but he says, cast all your anxieties on in every situation pray. And I just love that because He cares for us so deeply. He doesn’t care what it’s about. He doesn’t care how small and he doesn’t care how big it is like don’t be afraid to pray the big prayers either. So I love those two, I think it shows that simplicity. And then the other scripture that comes to mind is Psalm 23. And that’s one that many people know it’s a very well known passage. And it’s it’s the one where we say, The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want He makes me lie down in green pastures. And it’s really all about God caring for us deeply. He refreshes our soul, it says he guides us along the right path. Even when we’d walk through dark valleys, he’s with us and he comforts. So those are those, those are the words that he uses in that passage. And I just love it, because it’s such a beautiful visual of how much he cares for us.
Real Happy Mom 17:19
Yes, I love those. I love both of those. So I’ll make sure to include those in the show notes. But one last thing, Ryan, I know you we talked about, you know, those four pillars, and then also about, you know, how God is actually really interested in, in our in our health and wellness. And I just wanted to bring it back to because I know that there may be some moms listening who are struggling when it comes to their body in treating it like a temple. So I just wanted to bring it back to the the health side. And if you have like one thing that you could give us to just help us with getting us started on doing better about taking care of ourselves. From a health and wellness standpoint, what would you tell us to get to focus on this particular thing?
Ryanne 18:09
Oh, I love that question. Well, one of my favorite quotes is that you can’t pour from an empty cup. And that’s because I personally connect with it so deeply. As moms, we’re fierce caretakers, right. But I believe that if you cannot take care of yourself first, you can’t take care of everybody else, you’re giving all your energy away. And that is not sustainable. So hopefully you’ll see this from a health and wellness standpoint, you cannot that nothing else can function if you’re not taking care of yourself. And so first of all, I’m just giving you permission to take care of yourself in whatever way refreshes your soul. something positive, whatever fills you up, give yourself 10 minutes every single day to be alone. And do whether it’s reading a fun, not a fun fiction book, do that. Have your coffee in silence or you know, do something grander, once a month, get a massage, do something for yourself. And it doesn’t have to look like whatever way the rest of the world tells us. It doesn’t have to be a workout every day. Find something that you can care for yourself. Because I think that as moms we just so often forget about what do I enjoy personally. And I think for me, it’s getting into the Bible because like I talked about that God shaped hole I was searching and searching for so long. And I was a really unhappy mom. I was a really miserable wife and everything was conditional until I started pouring back into myself. And I see that was so many moms just boggling because they’re giving, giving giving and I’m like listen family, I can’t love you how I’m supposed to if I’m not pouring into myself. So I would say Do the one thing that you can for yourself that you love that you enjoy can reconnect with yourself. And then on a on a health and wellness standpoint, I would say, find out which of the four pillars and I can give you some questions to Tony and to ask your listeners in the show notes. which of the four pillars Do you need to focus on? First, because everybody has one. And like I said, Of course for me, I think it’s a spiritual pillar, but I’m not going to speak for every person. So I’ll have some questions in the show notes of which pillar Do you need to start with because it really is an individual process, but I believe motherhood is the most important job. Mothers change the world. So take care of you.
Real Happy Mom 20:44
Absolutely, I cannot agree more. And that has been kind of my theme song cuz you gotta be like,
Ryanne 20:53
yeah, we have to rewrite the story of motherhood.
Real Happy Mom 20:56
I think we really do it for sure. Because I think for too long, it’s been, you know, praised for the mother is being praised for for self sacrifice, and not taking care of herself and looking crazy. But you can still be an awesome mom, and take care of yourself.
Ryanne 21:17
Yeah. And you’re gonna be a better mom.
Real Happy Mom 21:20
For sure. Now, Ryan, you have been amazing given us a lot of great things to think about. I wanted you to just share with us how we can connect with you online if we want to either hear more from you or just learn more about you.
